Summer 2023:
This summer is packed with workshops!
In June, I'll be teaching some old favorites: an intro to oratory for JROTC's College Options and "Presidential Oratory in Times of Crisis" a workshop on oratory and rhetoric I developed for the college-aged students in the Ronald Reagan Foundation's Leadership and the American Presidency program.
In July, Ford's Theatre hosts professional development programs for teachers from all over the country, Civil War Washington and Set in Stone. For the former, I'll be delving into Lincoln's second inaugural address using our signature Actor's Approach close reading and performance technique. For the latter, we'll be doing a close reading and analysis of Frederick Douglass' oration in memory of Abraham Lincoln delivered at the unveiling of the Freedmen's Monument in 1876. I'm excited to learn more about this speech and the monument as I prepare for this two-hour workshop - and to hear the participants' voices give life to it as we use performance techniques to help us better understand it.
In August, I'll be leading some professional development workshops for both the teaching artists and the participants of Ford's Theatre's National Oratory Fellows, our signature program. After helping to revise the handbook over this last school year and to set clearer understandings of the oratory skills and professional development supports at each level of this scaffolded multi-year program that helps middle school classroom teachers successfully integrate oratory into their existing curriculum, I'm excited to share these with my colleagues.

2022-23 School Year:
The 2022-23 school year flew by. As predicted, I worked from five National Oratory Fellows from across the country - New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and two from Kansas - to integrate oratory into their classroom curricula. These incredible teachers taught a range of subjects and grades - everything from 8th-grade social studies to gifted middle schoolers doing a mock trial to general kindergarten. I found it so inspiring that, no matter their age or where they live, these students are developing confidence as public speakers who are able to: clearly construct and articulate persuasive arguments; give each other kind, specific, and constructive feedback; and collaborate and think on their feet through improv and theatre games.
I wrapped up the school year with three major events.
The first was a three-day National Oratory Fellows retreat. It's an annual event but this is the first time we've been able to hold it in person since 2019. Our Fellows, classroom teachers from all over the country, gathered, some of them with two student delegates each in tow. We held ice-breakers and workshops - some for the adults, some for the kids - had celebratory dinners & convivial lunches together, and the students performed their speeches on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in the same spot where MLK once stood to tell the world about his dream. A few of the teachers joined the students on the stage of Ford's Theatre on the final day of the event for a culminating performance, hosted by some of our local oratory students. It was magnificent.
The second event was a workshop for the students participating in the Mikva Challenge's 2023 National Youth Summit in Washington, D.C. who came together to perform original speeches at an event called "Soapbox Nation," held on the Ford's Theatre stage. "This inspiring event platforms youth advocates from around the country, who are chosen from among thousands to share a call-to-action speech about an issue that is impacting them or their community" (Mikva Challenge website). In my workshop with them, we did a physical, vocal, and mental warm-up and then I coached the students on their pieces. Meeting these high school and rising college students who passionately and clearly articulated their positions on important issues was nothing less than inspiring. I can't wait to see what they do as they become the next generation of political leaders and community advocates.
The third was a culminating oratory performance called "Stand Up, Be Heard" for the students of local teachers participating in the National Oratory Fellows program. Three DMV area schools, ranging from elementary through high school, brought several students each. I was elated to warm up the students and take them through a rehearsal for that evening's event where they would share their historical, contemporary, and original speeches.

Summer 2022:
In June, I wrapped up another great school year as a Master Teaching Artist at Ford's Theatre, working closely with my four National Oratory Fellows from New Jersey, Illinois, and (two from) Kansas. I also taught a workshop for the JROTC's College Options program on public speaking.
In July, I led a workshop on Ford's Theatre's approach to oratory for the National Council for History Education and Kentucky Educational Development Corporation. A week later, I led a workshop for Ford's Theatre's Civil War Washington Fellows on our signature Podium Points and Actor's Approach strategies using Lincoln's Second Inaugural speech as our model text.
In August, I led five workshops during the Ford's Theatre National Oratory Fellows "pretreat" weekend, on everything from partnering with a teaching artist - a new experience for many of our novice fellows - to advanced strategies to go beyond memorization and recitation when performing. I will be working with five fellows during the upcoming 2022-2023 school year - two from Kansas, and one each from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and South Dakota - to help them integrate oratory into their curricula.

2021 - 2022 School Year:
As another school year winds down, I'm reflecting on both the good fortune I've had and changes I've made.
I have decide to retire from acting and have submitted a temporary withdrawal from my membership to Actors' Equity. I will gladly reinstate my membership if the chance to play Lady M. or some other bucket list role comes up but, for now, I'm happy to focus on teaching.
My work with Ford's Theatre has been abundant and delightful. I've continued teaching with the National Oratory Fellows and Lincoln Online Oratory programs, developed and implemented a two-day professional development retreat for classroom teachers from all over the U.S., and have created and led workshops for the National Conference of State Legislatures and The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute's Leadership and The American Presidency Program.
With Shakespeare Theatre Company, I created and led a PDW for theatre teachers at D.C.'s Friendship Public Charter Schools on experiential learning techniques for teaching Shakespeare's plays.

June 2021:
Summer is here and the school year is winding down.
I completed the pilot year of an exciting new residency with Ford's Theatre, "Stand Up, Be Heard: The Podcast" in which high school students create podcast episodes on issues important to them. Students were responsible for selecting and researching a topic, writing scripts, interviewing experts, providing resources to listeners, and handling the technical editing. Ford's paired me with three English classes at Rockville H.S. in Rockville, Maryland and a broadcast journalism program at Wakefield H.S. in Arlington, Virginia. The students at the latter broke themselves into two groups and each group produced a trilogy series on either the mental health of students during the pandemic or LGBTQIA+ equity issues facing teens. The third episodes should be up on Ford's website soon, but in the meantime you can check out posted episodes for these schools and others here.
The Ford's National Oratory Fellows program completed another successful year even though we weren't able to gather, learn, and celebrate in person as we normally do each May. The wonderful elementary and middle school teachers I partnered with, who are based in California, Illinois, Kansas, and New Jersey, made great strides in their professional development as they integrated oratory into their curricula and have all been able to provide oratory learning and performance opportunities for their students this year, despite the pandemic. Some of the students joined us for a virtual version of our usual May workshops and speech performances. Many of the speeches they shared were original and were both well-researched and deeply personal.
Coming up, I'll be teaching a couple of oratory workshops through Ford's Theatre in July, but I plan on having a quiet and relaxing summer - and wish you the same!

March & April 2021:
Ford's Theatre just released an educational video, "Civil War Washington Through the Eyes of Mary Henry," for which I had the good fortune to play Mary Henry in voiceover. The video is available on YouTube. Designed for 8th-12th grade students studying the Civil War and Washington, D.C. history but I think it's fun for general audiences, too. Please pass it on to anyone who might be interested, especially middle and high school teachers!
It will be great to get back to performing in Shakespeare Theatre Company's two school shows, A MiniSummer Night's Dream and The Tiny Tempest, albeit on Zoom recordings. Details forthcoming!
I'm also happy to announce that I'll be performing Hillary Clinton's "Women's Rights are Human Rights" speech and co-facilitating a discussion on it through Ford's Theatre's Our Words, Our Power Speech Workshop Series. Click here (and scroll to the bottom of the page) for more information and to register for the free event, which takes place on Monday, 22 March at 7:00 p.m. Make sure to check out the other offerings, one per month from February through June.
Lastly, I'm a tour guide with Washington Walks, D.C.'s premier walking tour company. While we can't give in-person tours, we are doing hour-long Virtual Experiences and I'll be presenting two of these in March for Women's History Month. They're $10 each and are currently only available live via Zoom webinar, though we hope to make these videos on-demand at a later time.

January 2021:
Back in December 2020, I had the pleasure of rehearsing and recording a short play, Welcome to Hell!: An Orientation, on Zoom with Spooky Action Theater. The play will premiere on the company's YouTube Channel at 7:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, 21 January and will only be available until Sunday, the 24th. Watch it here!

2020:
Like everyone else in this industry, my acting career has (mostly) been put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic--and this came on the tails of another acting hiatus prompted by a family illness. Luckily, I've still been able to teach.
Although it was cut short when the schools closed, I thoroughly enjoyed my Shakespeare Theatre Company "Text Alive!" residency with Briar Woods High School - we focused on my sentimental favorite, Much Ado About Nothing. I've also had several classes and workshops with Ford's Theatre. On Tuesday, 14 July at 4 p.m. EST, I'll be co-leading a webinar on Lincoln's second inaugural address as part of Ford's Theatre's Lincoln's Great Words Challenge. Because his words are still so powerfully relevant, we're encouraging anyone who wants to participate to submit a recording of themselves reading or performing a Lincoln speech. Follow this link to learn more about the program, register for the webinar for free, and check out the recordings of all of the webinars in the series - including mine, if you miss it live.
This autumn, Brave Spirits Theatre, the company I co-founded in 2011, made the difficult decision to shutter following the financial devastation wrought by the pandemic and the resulting abrupt cancellation of its epic, history-making Histories project. I am proud to have helped launch this company and of the work they created. Read the official statement from BST and a moving tribute from the New York Times.
I had two projects arrive at year's end. The first was a short play, Welcome to Hell: An Orientation, written by Bridget Grace Sheaff and directed by Samantha Wyer Bello, for Spooky Action Theatre. We rehearsed and recorded on Zoom and the video will be available for a few days in late January 2021. The other project was a voiceover recording of excerpts from the diary of Mary Henry, daughter of the Secretary of the Smithsonian during the Civil War era. The diary excerpts are part of a program on Civil War Washington that Ford's Theatre is producing. I'll post relevant details for both once I have them.
Below you'll also find a little video I did recently for Ford's on rhetoric.

Fall - Winter 2018:
This is a slow season for me. With the exception of STC's school shows, I've needed to be step away from performing for family reasons and that includes resigning from a contract to play the Duchess of Malfi, one of my dream roles. I've been grateful for the support of family and friends.

Summer 2018:
It's my 6th year teaching the high schoolers of King's Company at Shakespeare Theatre Company's Camp Shakespeare. This year it's Much Ado About Nothing (performance at noon on Saturday, 7 July) and Romeo and Juliet (performance at noon on Saturday, 21 July; both shows at the Lansburgh).
In August, I'm taking a trip to Greece and am excited to see a performance of Aristophanes' The Frogs (in modern Greek with English titles) at the ancient amphitheater of Epidaurus.
Then it's back to rehearsals for STC's two school shows, The Tiny Tempest and A Mini-Summer Night's Dream so we can add new cast members into the mix. 2018-19 marks my 5th school year performing these shows and I'm thrilled to be introducing Shakespeare to so many elementary and middle school students.

For the fifth year, I performed scenes with some of my Shakespeare Theatre Company colleagues at the British Embassy. (New dress alert! It was pretty! See picture below. ) Other highlights of the spring were seeing my Text Alive! students perform their Hamlet scenes on STC's stage (see pics below, courtesy of Teresa Wood Photography), emceeing Ford's Theatre's National Oratory performance, and performing A Mini-Summer Night's Dream with STC Education. I also taught several Artist in the Classroom residencies for middle schools in Maryland's Montgomery Country through STC Education.

After wrapping up the school year with a performance of A Mini-Summer Night's Dream with Shakespeare Theatre Company's education department, I'm taking a much-needed vacation to Quebec City and Montreal. When I return, I'll jump right back into the fray with rehearsals for a reading of a new play. The script is beautifully written and I'm excited to delve into the character of Ivy. Info and reservations for the FREE reading are available here and a description is below:
Shoah Business
By Jennie Berman Eng
Directed by Kate Bryer
Friday, 23 June at 7:30 p.m. at Spooky Action Theater in D.C.
NYU Screenwriting student Ivy is tasked with writing a Holocaust screenplay. As she investigates a Mercedes Benz Holocaust labor camp for women, and begins to write about it, she soon discovers writing historical fiction is a great responsibility and carries hefty emotional weight. When she is offered a production deal, Ivy must decide if the requested edits that come along with the deal are worth compromising a true story.

Spring is always a busy time filled with multiple in-school residencies for Shakespeare Theatre Company, including Text Alive! and Artist in the Classroom. I'm also wrapping up my fourth year working with the incredible classroom teachers from across the nation who are Ford's Theatre's National Oratory Fellows. Our year-long program concludes on Monday, 8 May as student delegates and select fellows perform original and historical speeches on Ford's stage. (The event starts at 4:00 p.m. It's free but tickets are required. Get them here.)
Additionally, I'm excited to announce that I'll be performing for the fourth time at the British Embassy's annual open house on Saturday, 13 May. (Picture from this year's event below.) Get more info here.

As a Ford's Theatre Teaching Artist, I had the honor of teaching a workshop this month for DCPS 5th and 6th grade classroom teachers who are part of Washington Performing Arts' Embassy Adoption partnership program. The workshop focused on strategies to teach oratory including warm-ups and ways to offer advice when coaching students. Feedback from participants was positive: "Victoria's presentation on public speaking was exceptional."

November 2016 - January 2017:
My holidays are always book-ended by the end and start of Text Alive! residencies with STC. All three of my Romeo and Juliet classes did well at their performance. (The picture below is of one of my favorite moments, when the Nurse warns Romeo, "...if you should deal double with her, truly it were an ill thing to be offered to any gentlewoman, and very weak dealing." The kids were great at physical comedy! Peter is totally helping out the Nurse by supporting Romeo's body. Awesome. Photo credit: Teresa Wood Photography.) Next up: Macbeth with Briar Woods H.S.
I also traveled to Denver, PA to work with the teachers and students at Cocalico Middle School on their second annual Theatre Day. Coaching students on their original and historical speeches was so rewarding. Two of the teachers at Cocalico are Ford's National Oratory Fellows, which is a program I've had the honor of working with for the last four years.

Besides rehearsing for A Dream Within a Dream: Madness (see the July post for more info), I'm working with Shakespeare Theatre Company's education department on our two touring shows, A Tiny Tempest (in which I play Prospero and a very pirate-y Boatswain) and A Mini-Summer Night's Dream (Theseus, Fairy, and Lion). We have four performances of Tiny Tempest on the weekend of August 27th and 28th as part of STC's offerings in conjunction with its Free-For-All mainstage performance of The Tempest. As usual, my summer is filled with full-time Camp Shakespeare teaching work through STC. I have three camps:
A Midsummer Night's Dream with Kings Company, June 27 - July 8
Twelfth Night with King's Company, July 11 - 23
Twelfth Night with Young Players, July 25 - August 6
I'm also starting rehearsals for my next show, A Dream Within a Dream: Madness. This is the third incarnation of the play that won the 2014 Capital Fringe Festival's Best Site-Specific award and is a commission for the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria. Immersive theatre is so fun to do and I'm honored to be returning to the role of Madame Maillard, supervisor of the Maison de Sante. We open September 7th and run through October 31st.

After closing The Maid's Tragedy, I've got school show performances of A Mini-Summer Night's Dream and The Tiny Tempest with Shakespeare Theatre Company's education department and lots of workshops for both STC and Ford's.
On May 14th, I had the honor of performing at the British Embassy's annual open house through a partnership with the Shakespeare Theatre Company. It was my third time doing it, and I've now met two different ambassadors! Below is a picture of us with Sir Kim and Lady Victoria Darroch.
I'm also shooting my first short film, Rainbow Bridge, with 811 Films. You can read more by visiting www.rainbowbridgeshort.com.

January 2016:
And so it begins: a new year filled with so many possibilities! After a busy fall of teaching and performing, I took a little time off in December to spend with family. It was delightful. I'm hitting the ground running in January.
Rehearsals are underway for The Maid's Tragedy, a sexy, twisted, and touching Jacobean drama, with Brave Spirits Theatre.
Preview: February 18th at 8 pm
Runs: February 19th - March 6th. Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm. Sundays at 9 pm
Industry Night: Monday, February 29th at 8 pm
Where: Convergence (room: The Sanctuary), 1801 N. Quaker Lane, Alexandria, VA 22302
(From N. Quaker Lane, turn left onto Crestwood Drive for free street and lot parking.)
Teaching has kept me busy as well. I have four classrooms with Ford's National Lincoln Oratory Festival that I'm working with this month in addition to my three Ford's National Oratory Fellows. For the latter, I traveled to Cocalico Middle School in Denver, PA for their Theatre Day on January 19th. It was a blast and I worked with the entire 7th grade on their original speeches.
I also have a new coaching student this month and I'm getting to work with her on Shakespeare's Cleopatra. If you've ever wanted to explore a Shakespeare or other classical text through one-on-one instruction, I'd be happy to do that with you. My rates are between $50 and $60/hour depending on circumstances. Message me for more information.

May 2015:
On May 9th, I performed at the British Embassy with Shakespeare Theatre Company. After sharing scenes and monologues with people enjoying the annual open house, we were privileged to meet His Excellency, the British Ambassador, and got a lovely picture with him, left.
Two major teaching events fill my time in late April into May. One is the annual residency at Pyle Middle School, where I teach 7th graders and 8th graders how to perform Shakespeare via A Midsummer Night's Dream and As You Like It, respectively. The second is the culminating event of my year-long work with the Ford's Theatre National Oratory Fellows, a long weekend over which 18 fellows (classroom teachers from all over the U.S.) and their student delegates converge on D.C. for workshops, reflection, and a performance of historical and original speeches on the Ford's stage. Here are two great articles about the fellowship and the culminating retreat weekend:

Rehearsals start for Arden of Faversham with Brave Spirits Theatre. I'm thrilled to be playing Alice Arden, a housewife who plots with her lover, neighbors, and two incompetent hit-men to murder her husband. Based on a true story from 1551, the play was written sometime in the late 1580's or early 1590's. Shakespeare may or may not have had a hand in writing it. I'm also delighted to announce that I've been cast in a new webseries, Dear Aunt Jane. I won't reveal too much yet but it imagines Jane Austen time traveling to 2015 Georgetown and writing a love advice column for a magazine whose employees become the inspiration for Austen's Sense and Sensibility. I will play Eleanor Dashwood.
